The constructive role of plant facilitation and diversity in pollination networks

QUA 07/04 às 14h00

A cardinal notion in ecology is that the environment influences organisms. Yet, populations have the power to create and modify their surrounding environment, in turn influencing other species and ecosystem processes. I will present recent advances in quantifying changes in ecological networks and functions due to plant facilitation and associated biodiversity. After examining cases where direct plant facilitation can prompt both pollination facilitation and interference, I will show how facilitation and complementarity effects between plants increase ecosystem functioning across trophic levels. I will conclude highlighting a novel mechanism underlying the consequences of biodiversity change and the constructive impact of biological populations on their environment.
